Samsung D600 Review

Samsung D600Mobile Burn takes their turn looking at what they call the near perfect D600 slider phone.

Samsung’s SGH-D600 is the update to the company’s popular D500 model. While the two share much, like a black exterior and a slider form factor, the newer D600 sports a lot of upgrades not seen on the older model. Features such as stereo Bluetooth support, a 2 megapixel camera, a TransFlash/microSD memory card slot, and a new QVGA display go a long way towards setting the D600 apart from its older sibling. But even with all of these upgrades, the SGH-D600 shares some less than welcome traits with the D500; most notably the slow T9 predictive text input system.

But even with a handful of nits to pick, the D600 is a top notch phone and one of my personal favorites on the market right now. It does almost everything well, and most things very well. Read on to see if the quad band GSM D600 is right for you.

Apple’s Aperture 1.0 Review

CreativePro.com has a review of Apple’s Aperture and they give it a three out of four on their rating scale.

While today’s image-editing programs provide phenomenal tools for correcting and adjusting images, the digital image-editing workflow still confounds many photographers — especially those who shoot raw. Aperture 1.0, Apple’s entry into the professional digital image-editing marketplace, aims to solve the photographer’s workflow dilemma by providing a single application that performs sorting and cataloging, raw conversion, basic image editing, Web page generation, printing, and archiving. The program provides exceptional, unique tools for comparing and sorting images, but it’s hampered by a number of weaknesses. Ironically, you may find that trying to work around these issues requires a workflow more complicated than what you already have.

Cingular Introduces the Nokia 6061

Nokia 6061A low-end flip phone from Nokia, the Nokia 6061, comes with a solid set of features that could make it a popular device for its target market.

…the Nokia 6061 is a lightweight flip phone with a nice 65k color display, and dual-band functionality. The 6061 sports an email client, can send and receive MMS messages, and can use MP3 ringtones - though with only 3Mb of memory the usefulness of this is questionable. Java applications are supported, and the Nokia 6061 also includes speakerphone functionality. There is no camera included, but this does help reduce the weight of the handset to only 92g (3.25oz)…

Cingular has the Nokia 6061 available for $39.99 USD with a two year service agreement.

Two days ago Sprint Nextel let the world know that they have teamed up with MSpot, a mobile media company, in providing streaming full length movies and other videos to Sprint PCS customers.

Similar to Verizon’s V CAST service, Sprint however gave no information on their network’s EV-DO 3G capabilities. For $6.95 US a month subscribers will have the ability to watch unlimited movie “chapters” which are short clips that are roughly five minutes in length. MSpot plans on offering movies from various categories, including: Comedy, Drama, Horror, Adventure, Westerns, Animated Features, and Movie Shorts.

The MSpot Movies service will also feature some old TV shows and concert events. MSpot has also said that they will be adding more content to the service on a weekly basis.

LG u880 3G Phone Review

3G has a look at the u880 and I quote “Wave goodbye to the old LG 3G phones and bring in the new. LG downsizes and makes a giant step forward in the 3G handset desirability stakes.”

Here is some more information from their review:

Last month, LG unveiled the u880 as the “world’s slimmest 3G phone” and at 18.2mm thick, I don’t know of any 3G phone in Europe that’s thinner. I’ve checked the Motorola V3x 3G phone and its 19.6mm thick. At 98 grams, this is certainly one of the lightest around. The last LG we reviewed weighed in at 132 grams ( LG 8360 ). Now that’s downsizing for you.

The early LG 3G phones lacked some basic features like : Bluetooth, a powerful camera and expandable memory. Those shortcomings are brushed aside with the arrival of LG’s new 3G offering. One thing for sure is that 3G is definitely moving out of the infancy phase when you see 3G phones like this hitting the shops. My first impression of the u880 is that its “on the money”.

Sony Ericsson W550i Review

Sony Ericsson W550i Hardware Zone has a look at the W550i from Sony Ericsson and gives it almost two thumbs up.

On the whole, the new W550i is a pleasant camera phone to use. Despite the somewhat weak reception quality experienced along the course of this review, there were still enough positive attributes such as a long battery life, ease of use, high responsiveness, great bundle, and decent audio quality to impress us. For a tidy sum of USD$358 and going as low as USD$298 (depending on carrier contract bundles), the W550i is quite reasonably priced too, and if it was not for the minor reception issue, we would have tagged a 4-star award for the second ‘Walkman’ phone from Sony Ericsson.

Orange SPV C600 Review

Orange SPV C600CoolSmartPhone.com takes a look at the SPV C600 from Orange. They give it a complete work over including images of the unit from almost every angle.

The C600 is a very good phone. It does all the flashy stuff you want plus it ain’t bad at making phone calls either. Call quality is spot on and it connected to my Bluetooth headset first time. Whilst it’s not a massively different handset from the C500, Orange have built on the success that the C500 gave. The SPV C600 can be compared to a Formula 1 car. Although it looks almost the same as last years F1 car, the engine, on-board computer, suspension and stability of the car have been improved greatly.

It’s worth mentioning quickly that this Orange SPV C600 is also sold in the USA as the Cingular 2125. It does however, have a weird blob on the top. The C600 doesn’t have this!

Electronic Arts To Buy Jamdat Mobile

Electronic Arts is looking to expand its gaming reach, and to do so it is aquiring Jamdat Mobile, currently the top publisher of wireless video games.

The publisher of many popular games including Tetris, Downtown Texas Hold ‘Em, and Bejeweled, Jamdat Mobile will be taken over by EA shortly after the fiscal fourth quarter, ending March 2006. The aquisition will cost Electronic Arts $27 USD a share, or $680 million dollars total. The deal is pretty nice considering it is 18% over Jamdat’s Thursday closing price of $22.77 USD a share.

Chip makers drive race to $20 cellphones by 2007

Prices have been dropping pretty fast on handsets, but some of the new feature filled phones are debuting at prices close to used cars. Well around 2007 you might be able to pick up a basic phone for around $20 thanks to the decreasing costs of the chips used to build the phones.

The article goes on to saw how mobile phones could even be produced for as cheap as $10, but the major phone vendors would be reluctant to do so because they would have to use cheaper parts and lower quality would hurt their brand.

Though if done right, consumers will get high quality, just with less features. This sounds like exactly the phone I am looking for. I just want a cell phone with good quality audio and really good reception. I don’t need a contact list, with text messaging, and custom ring tones. I just need a regular cell phone.

Reuters with the story.
