2MP Cameraphone Shootout: Sony Ericsson’s K750 vs. Nokia’s N90

Here is a great idea: take two camera phones and pit them against each other. Well that is exactly what Mobile Burn did with their look at the Sony Ericsson K750 versus the Nokia N90.

Ever since the Nokia N90 and Sony Ericsson K750 were announced, people have been speculating as to which device would take better 2 megapixel photos. Would it be the N90, with its Carl Zeiss designed optics, or the compact K750 with its parent Sony’s electronics? Both devices have pretty similar specs when it comes to their cameras: both are 2 megapixel units, both have auto focusing capability, and both have a history of cameras in the family (Sony’s digital cameras and Zeiss’ lenses). The K750’s camera has a slightly wider field of view, and seems to be a bit “faster” than the N90’s (meaning it needs less light), but otherwise these two cameras are pretty evenly matched.

While Sony Ericsson’s megapixel cameraphones have always been among the best available, I have to admit that I figured that the N90, with the backing of Carl Zeiss engineering, would end up being the superior camera - at least when it came to optical quality.

But that didn’t happen.

Nokia 8800 Review

Nokia 8800Pocket Lint has a look at the Nokia 8800, a slider handset that when holding it is said to feel like you are holding something strong and expensive.

Nokia’s 8800 sells itself on its sleek lines and shiny exterior, but can the phone live up to its glamorous marketing campaign or is it a case of style over substance. We take a closer look.

After the usual barrage of reviewing practical technology designed for problem solving the delivery of the Nokia 8800 struck me like a small lottery win might.

Just sitting with the wonderfully elaborate box that the handset ships in made me forget my once embarrassing lust for the Motorola RAZR phone.

The phone itself is crafted from highly polished metal and holding it in your hand you may well find yourself giving a satisfactory sigh, if not at that point, then the slide mechanism certainly will bring it out of you.

Verizon Wireless Re-Releases the Motorola V710

Motorola V710The V710 camera phone from Motorola was not the highlight of Verizon Wireless’ line of phones because certain Bluetooth features were not supported by the Motorola V710, and Verizon didn’t accurately disclose that fact. They ended up settling the court case against them last month.

Now they are re-launching the phone, available online only, and hopefully this time around they won’t make the same mistake.

Features include a 1.2 megapixel camera with flash, record and send 15 second videos, speakerphone.

The Motorola V710 is available online only for $69.99 after a $50.00 online discount and a two year contract. The offer will end on November 2nd.

Nokia N90 Review

Nokia N90For those of you that have been drooling over the Nokia 90 since it was first mentioned, Cool Tech Zone has a review of this twisting clamshell, and they did not seem too impressed.

Ever since we had heard about the Nokia N90, we were skeptical, but the substantially inflated price tag gave us some hope. In the end, however, we were somewhat disappointed, but not completely surprised by what we had tested in the form of N90. To reiterate our question from the introduction page, “…does it have what it takes to justify the bulkiness and the hefty price tag?” The answer to that is obviously a definitive no.

Although the images are well focused, the video is just about average, and obviously not as excelling as Nokia claims to be. With that said, please note that videos from a cell phone look incredibly detailed, but they serve no purpose in the end, as the quality just isn’t high enough for you to enjoy them on your computer or TV.

The user interface is sluggish, and unfortunately, this is increasingly becoming a problem with Nokia phones. Pick up any Sony Ericsson and you will find the interface to be responsive and sudden, plus the entire interface is a lot more polished. With the Nokia N90, the screen refresh is probably sluggish, so when you switch windows, it takes a fair bit of time to update the icons.

HTC Star Trek

HTC Star TrekOkay, for those of you that do not know me personally, I have to admit, I am a big Star Trek television show fan.

So when I heard that there was a phone with the name “Star Trek”, I had to check it out.

The HTC Star Trek is a smartphone with EDGE, GPRS, and GSM Quadband. Its internal screen is 320 pixels by 240.

It has bluetooth capabilities, and a 2 megapixel camera with flash.

For size, it falls into place right next to the RAZR in dimensions, without much difference. The only downpoint currently about the phone is that it won’t be released until sometime around March of 2006.

Samsung Serene First Look Review

Samsung SerenePocket Lint has a quick look at the Samsung Serene, a designer handset, that is set-up differently than most.

You can immediately see and feel the Bang and Olufsen part of the project on the phones sleek casing, aluminium clasp and the timeless eighties tape deck opening mechanism which opens to reveal an upside down design where in general use the screen is at the bottom and numeric pad the top.

Using the handset for making calls is a simple enough affair with an iPod style click wheel for menu selection but texters will have to endure a work-out of their fingers for anything longer than one-liners.

They currently have not added a score for the phone, but I am sure that will come when they have a chance to fully review the phone.

Motorola E1000 Review

Motorola E1000

A slightly older 3G phone, the E1000 has just been reviewed by Mobile Burn. They were unable to test its abilities as a 3G phone, but still have five pages of content detailing the ups and downs of this handset.

The E1000 has a bar style form factor, but has nice rounded edges. This makes the phone look sleek, and the nice touches of black and silver, and a matt gray battery cover add to the phone’s attractive design. Measuring 114mm x 52mm x 23mm (4.48” x 2.04” x 0.9”), the E1000 is definitely not a small phone. Its design does make it look smaller than it really is, though, which is an advantage. The E1000 does not appear too bulky, or too large for a woman’s hand. The E1000 is no lightweight at 140g, but it’s no issue to me as it slips nicely into my pocket.
