Sony Ericsson W600 Review
So many cell phones are coming out with cameras, mp3 music abilities, and other crazy features, some of them are well designed as well, and I think the W600 is one of those phones. Mobiledia seems to agree with their review of the Sony Ericsson W600.
It seems much of the W600’s advantage is its swivel design. Allowing consumers to use horizontal and vertical implementations depending upon application, its versatility is something missing on other devices on the market.
Featuring a 1.3-megapixel camera, capable of taking high-quality printable photos, imaging could easily be mistaken as the W600’s main focus. The innovative design of the horizontal layout allows consumers to use the W600 much like a standalone digital camera. Bundled with a plethora of filters and effects, the W600’s robust photo capabilities are hard to beat.
Panasonic VS7 Review
It looks like the VS7 from Panasonic is a nice phone for the average person, but when compared to others in the same price range, it might not be one to pick up, as Mobile Burn reviewed it and had this to say:
Generally, I am quite pleased with the VS7. Being priced at the exact same level as the Sony Ericsson K750i, it will definitely cause some competition. The customizable faceplates, breath-taking screen, and the handset’s slimness will capture a lot of attention.
However, most of the VS7’s flaws are deal breakers. For example, sound quality over the earpiece is below average, there is no memory expansion, and the keypad is excessively small. There is no reason why Panasonic could not place a memory slot in the VS7, thickness is not an excuse because the technology is already there, as seen from their latest P902i announcement in Japan. The P902i manages to include an extra camera for video-conferencing, a W-CDMA chip and antenna, miniSD slot, and Felica electronic money antenna into the same thickness.

Toshiba TS921 3G Phone Review
3G.co.uk has a look at the TS921 from Toshiba, a 3G phone with an interesting flip and spin clamshell design.
While it’s just shy of two megapixels, the resultant snaps rank alongside the Sharp 902 and Sony Ericsson K750 two-megapixel camera phones. The pictures below are brimming with colour and detail – good enough to print without any loss of quality. While impressive on paper, if pushed to the max, its 20x digital zoom can give pixelated images, so seems a bit worthless. However, there is a macro setting to help focus on those detailed close-ups.
Admittedly, the TS921’s uncompromising physique might dissuade some people, and it doesn’t help the 3G cause. However, we can’t deny its 3G performance won us over, and Toshiba should be more than pleased with its debut UK mobile handset.
It should be interesting to see where Toshiba goes from here as this review makes it sound like they have the phone to have, except for the size.
New Motorola V557 from Cingular Delivers Zero-Click Access
LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Giving consumers a new way to connect, access information or enjoy in-demand multimedia, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), a global leader in wireless communications, announced the availability of the Motorola V557. The new flip phone is on shelves now at Cingular Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S.
The Motorola V557 is the first handset to include Motorola’s SCREEN3(1) - an innovative technology that pushes information out to the phone idle screen in a “ticker tape” that runs along the bottom of the screen. This technology enables consumers to get news, sports, entertainment, and other premium content and services directly from their mobile device home screen (no buttons to push, no browsers to launch). Cingular is the first operator to offer SCREEN3 through the company’s Media Net Live Ticker service(1) available now on Motorola V557 for the holidays.
In addition to offering “zero-click” access to the wireless web, the Motorola V557 features a VGA camera, video record and playback, and advanced messaging(1). EDGE (Enhanced Data Global Evolution) technology(1) and Cingular’s consumer data services(1), such as Picture Messaging and Cingular Sounds, enhance the multimedia offerings and enable subscribers to share images and download MP3 ringtones with unprecedented speed.
“The Motorola V557 gives consumers a new way to enjoy continuous access to news, sports, entertainment and more — functioning as the ideal mobile phone for anyone looking to stay connected to their world,” said Bob Suastegui, vice president in the Mobile Devices Group at Motorola. “Whether sharing picture messages, catching up on world events or downloading new games, this compact flip phone delivers a complete multimedia experience.”
The Motorola V557 features chrome details and a soft-touch finish. With Bluetooth(R) wireless technology, Instant Messaging (IM)(1) and email(1), users can stay connected the way that suits them best.
Pricing and Availability

Introducing The Latest ‘Catch’ From Cingular: The Firefly Phone
ATLANTA and CHICAGO, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Cingular Wireless and Firefly Mobile, Inc. today announced the availability of the Firefly phone, a pioneering mobile phone designed specifically for kids ages 12 and under. Cingular is the first national U.S. carrier to launch this unique voice-only phone. Firefly Mobile also announced this week that the Firefly phone was awarded the prestigious 2006 ‘Best of Innovations’ Award in the telephone category from the Consumer Electronics Association (CES).
The Firefly phone was designed with just five keys instead of a regular dial pad. Parents use a private PIN to program up to 22 outgoing numbers into the phone, including speed-dial keys for Mom and Dad. Kids place calls by pressing the Mom or Dad key, or selecting a name in the Phone Book and pressing “send.” Caller ID lets your child know who’s calling. An optional call screening feature can be activated, allowing the phone to accept incoming calls from only those numbers programmed into the phone.
“From ballet class to soccer practice to piano lessons-children are increasingly engaged in activities outside of the home and school,” said David Garver, executive director, segment marketing and sponsorships, Cingular Wireless. “We’re excited to offer a device that is designed with parents and, especially, their kids in mind. With the Firefly phone, parents can easily control their kids’ calling activity, while kids can enjoy the cool look and feel of the device and stay connected to friends and parents while on the go.”
“Parents asked us for a variety of calling plans for their Firefly phones and we are delighted that Cingular, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, is bringing the Firefly phone and a choice of plans to its customers,” said Fred Bullock, CMO, Firefly Mobile. “Cingular, like Firefly Mobile, recognizes that parents are searching for a mobile phone explicitly designed for kids ages 12 and under that suits an individual’s parenting style and is fun for kids to use.”
Kids Make The Firefly Phone Their Own
Weighing only two ounces, the Firefly phone - The Mobile Phone for Mobile Kids(TM) - is designed to fit comfortably in a child’s hand. The Firefly phone lights up like a firefly when the phone rings, and intermittently when it is in use, when charging and when in standby mode. Kids can personalize their Firefly phone whenever they wish by selecting ringtones, animations, and backlight colors that come preloaded on the phone.
Cingular and Firefly Mobile offer an array of accessories for the Firefly phone, which enable kids to add a little more personalization to their phone to fit their taste. Accessories available at Cingular retail outlets include a “fashion kit” with a “bubblegum” colored collectible shell and wristlet purse, and an “action kit” with a “slime” colored collectible shell and pouch.
Pricing and Availability
The Firefly phone and accessories are available now through participating Cingular retail locations or via www.cingular.com. The Firefly is $49.99, after a $25 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract. The Firefly phone is available on Cingular’s $9.99 FamilyTalk(R) plan.
Sony Ericsson FM Radio Equipped J230
Mobile Burn has a look at the new J230 from Sony Ericsson. Similar in every way to its brother the J220 that was launched the same day, the J230 includes an FM radio function, which I personally think all musical devices should come with as a standard.
Like the J220, the J230 offers a single icon per page menu system in addition to the normal 3×3 icon grid menu typically used by Sony Ericsson handsets.
Beyond that, the J230 offers little except for compact size, low weight, and the ability to swap covers by purchasing optional Sony Ericsson Style-Up covers.
There will be two different dual-band GSM versions of the device available: one for the Americas, and one for the rest of the world. Sony Ericsson expects the J220 to start shipping in Q1 of 2006.
10 Most-Popular Cell Phones
Wirefly has created a list of its most popular cell phones currently on the market. Of the 10 most popular phones going into the holiday shopping season, the top 7 are camera phones .
“Camera phones enjoyed enormous uptake when they started being offered for free,” explained Brian Westrick, President of Wirefly.
The ever-popular Motorola RAZR camera phones for T-Mobile and Cingular are offered free after rebate and with service activation. They continue to be Wirefly’s hottest sellers. In addition to the RAZR, the #1 best-selling phones for each of the major carriers — Alltel Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless — all feature built-in cameras as well .
Currently, Wirefly’s most-popular cell phones are:
1. Motorola RAZR V3 (Camera Phone)
2. Motorola E815 (Video and Camera Phone)
3. Samsung PM-A740 (Camera Phone)
4. Motorola V330 (Video and Camera Phone)
5. Audiovox 8910 (Camera Phone)
6. Motorola V220 (Camera Phone)
7. Motorola i850 (Camera Phone)
8. Motorola i710
9. Motorola V188
10. Motorola V260
“It used to be that print-quality camera phones were very expensive. That limited their appeal,” added Westrick. “Heading into this holiday season, competition has heated up, and we’re now able to offer customers free camera-equipped cell phones upon activation with just about any plan, including Verizon Wireless, Cingular T-Mobile, Sprint/Nextel and others. That magic price was the key to camera phones taking off like they have.”
Camera Phone Modules Shrinking
Even with the improved resolution of the current generation of digital cameras embedded into cell phones over the previous generation, the actual size of the digital camera being put into cell phones is shrinking.
Mobile Mag with the details:
Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) has developed a 2.0 megapixel camera module that measures an extremely small 8.8 x 8.5 x 6.9 mm. Furthermore it also has developed a 1.3 megapixel camera module that measures 7.4 x 7.4 x 5.0 mm. By manufacturing and designing them in an innovative manner, the two Samsung creations are 35% smaller than any existing camera modules currently being used.
I am surprised though with the new smaller designs that we are not seeing more web cams built into laptops and other portable devices.
