MobiTV and IPWireless Partner

Mobile television services are slowly starting to take off, and with that comes companies trying to capitalize on it and two companies MobiTV and IPWireless are going to partner to work on such endeavours and expect to release a product in mid 2007.

EMERYVILLE, CA and SAN BRUNO, CA, February 8, 2006 - MobiTV, Inc., the global leader in digital television and music services for mobile devices, and IPWireless today announced that the two companies plan to jointly develop next generation mobile television delivery solutions that combine today’s unicast technologies with TDtv multicasting in order to optimally manage network utilization, all while providing a seamless MobiTV experience for customers. During the first half of 2006, the companies will demonstrate delivery of MobiTV over TDtv to mobile handsets.

Many operators worldwide have launched successful mobile television offerings using the Emmy® Award winning MobiTV® service and other multimedia services over their existing 2.5G and 3G networks. MobiTV’s global network offering, using unicast technology today, accelerates time-to-market and allows operators to capitalize on early mobile television demand. In the future adoption rate and demand for mobile television will require other broadcast or multicast solutions to compliment or co-exist with the unicast offering. TDtv is an ideal partner offering, able to leverage the newly defined 3GPP Release 6 Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS) standard to allow an infinite number of customers to watch the same channel or use the same network bandwidth.

MobiTV and IPWireless plan to work together to co-develop solutions that enable operators to migrate subscribers in high-usage areas to TDtv, utilizing their existing 3G spectrum. The two companies will also work with operators to ensure this unicast and broadcast combination is seamless for the mobile subscriber. As part of this, MobiTV will develop a H.264 version of its player to run over TDtv. H.264 is the video codec defined in the 3GPP MBMS standard that allows higher quality video to be delivered over wireless networks.

Some really cool details on the P990 from Sony Ericsson coming in from Pocket-Lint. It looks like the phone will have a few tricks up its sleeve that were not announced in the original announcement months ago.

Sony Ericsson has turned the 2 megapixel camera into a business card scanner as well as a camera and also added support for email clients including Blackberry Connect and Seven.

Finally, the company has added Microsoft ActiveSync support to the device for windows users.

Motorola SLVR L7 Review

Motorola SLVR L7Pocket-Lint takes a look at the SLVR L7 from Motorola. I find it slightly amusing that it is called the L7 because as a child, I used to make that symbol to mean that someone was “square” or uncool, and now to find it gracing a new iTunes phone that looks cool, I think L7 will have its meaning changed.

the SLVR is incredibly slim – 11.5mm slim in fact and this means you can happily tuck it in a trouser pocket without every girl you talk thinking you’ve got other things on your mind.

Like the RAZR before it, the top of the phone is flush flat and the keypad made from aluminium. Improved from the RAZR however, is the slightly raised numbers and this does help locate them when you’re texting without really looking. As before the phone glows in that Tron-like state whenever you start pressing buttons.

In the end though the reviewers at Pocket-Lint were not too impressed as iTunes support was left out for the European model, and a VGA camera, just isn’t what they’d expect from a phone that is trying to be the next RAZR and so it earns itself a slightly above average 6/10.

Motorola V360 Review

Motorola V360Mobile Burn puts the V360 from Motorola through its paces, and in the end they give it a highly recommended rating, eventhough the find the user interface slow, and the camera average.

The latest member of Motorola’s famous V-series is the Motorola V360. Armed with quite an impressive feature set, it is a worthy upgrade from the previous V300. This new mid-range clamshell phone is armed with Bluetooth, a 262k color TFT screen, an antenna-less form factor, and most important of all, expandable memory.

The Motorola V360 is a tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900Mhz) phone. It is equipped with a VGA camera, Push-to-Talk capabilities, and GPRS/EDGE connectivity. The great thing about the V360 is its low price tag. For its features, it pretty much gives you the best bang for your buck.

Orange SPV M5000 Review

Orange SPV M5000It looks like an eight out of a possible ten for the SPV M5000 from Orange, as it begins to merge into the life of one of TrustedReviews reviewers.

I’ve been using the SPV M5000 for a while now and although I wasn’t overly keen on it at first, it’s really grown on me. The M5000 is my regular companion whenever I attend a press briefing these days, and I’ve become adept enough with the keyboard to be able to take notes at a fast enough pace to negate the need for paper and pen. It also allows me to keep up to date with my email when I’m out of the office, rather than having to trawl through 200 messages the next day. Basically, the SPV M5000 has given me an alternative to my notebook and 3G data card – if I know that I’ll be writing some content and uploading articles to TrustedReviews, I’ll take my notebook and data card, but if I just want to keep in touch with the office and stay up to date with email, I’ll throw the M5000 in my bag and save myself the extra weight of my notebook.

Verizon Wireless Introduces VZ Navigator, Providing Location-Based Service for Consumers

Integrating map services on a cell phone is a novel idea, as it has worked well on PDA’s and other devices for years, and so the VZ Navigator from Verizon Wireless should be very useful despite the small screen of most cell phones these days. And anything that helps me get from point-A to point-B without asking for directions, is always welcome. Such is the curse of being a man.

BEDMINSTER, N.J., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ — Beginning today, gas station attendants can breathe a little easier, thanks to a new service that gives wireless customers turn-by-turn directions in the palms of their hands.
