Apple iPhone

You need your phone anywhere you go. You love music and watching videos. And at the same time, you’re an internet geek.

Apple has the right device for you — the Apple iPhone. The iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device.

Being a widescreen iPod with touch controls, it lets you enjoy everything you used to do in your iPod, but this time on a 3.5-inch display. With its large memory capacity of 4GB (or 8GB), you can store as many music files and videos. Having a touch screen feature, you could call anyone on your address book with just a point of your finger. And you can browse the internet with its most advanced web browser for a portable device.

The iPhone’s revolutionary interface makes you control everything using only your fingers. This phone is not out in the market yet, but it just makes me more excited to have a touch on this thing. No more keypads or stylus. It’s all touch screen.

Mobicharger: Disposable Power

MobichargerYou are driving along far from home and realize you need to call someone but unfortunately your cell phone’s battery is dead. You pull up to a convenience store and inside they have a Mobicharger vending machine. You put in around $10 and out pops a disposable battery that will give you an hour of talk time and 480 minutes of standby time that works with your brand of cell phone.

At least that is the plan as they will first appear in London’s Gatwick Airport for a little less than £5 ($9 USD).

Nokia’s aeon Full Screen Concept

Nokia's aeonNokia has really kicked it up a notch with the aeon concept phone, which recently was showed off in the R&D section of the company’s website.

The most prominent design feature of the aeon, and while it is so interesting is the touchscreen that stretches over the full surface of the phone. This is similar to the BenQ-Siemens Black box concept phone, but the shots of the aeon looks really slick.

Cheapest Wins

Over at Gizmodo, they have an article up taking a quick look at the cheap and “free” options cell phone carriers are providing these days.

We’re the sorts who prefer a dollar today to a buck fifty two years down the line, and so what we look for is this, and this alone: what sort of free cell do I get for signing up? After the jump, a rundown of what America’s wireless providers are giving away at present, as a means to deciding which company really, truly loves us low-enders.

After looking at a large number of companies, they concluded that Sprint is the winner, as they provide the best handset for the cheapest price.

The nicest stuff here is by Samsung, particularly the A640. What’s incredible about the A640 deal is that it’s such a new handset, having only been released this past July. The fact that they’re handing this out to new recruits isn’t exactly a sign that you should start buying Sprint stock, but a company’s misery is often a miser’s gain, eh?

D-Link V-CLICK Dual-Mode GSM / Wi-Fi Phone

D-Link V-CLICKI have been thinking about getting a cell phone for quite some time now, and these new phones that allow for connection to 802.11 Wi-Fi networks are a very interesting prospect for me, especially ones like the D-Link V-CLICK that allows you to switch to a cellular mode.

The V-CLICK has a slot for your cellular service provider’s SIM Smartcard or chip, and when you enter a Wi-fi hot spot, a quick press of the V-CLICK button and the phone activates or deactivates the Wi-Fi connection so you can make that cheap, or sometimes even free VIOP phone call.

The D-Link V-CLICK phone features standards-based wireless encryption (WEP, WPA and WPA2) built in for enhanced security of transmission.

Features of the D-Link V-CLICK phone include:

  • Wi-Fi profile roaming for uninterrupted service between wireless zones
  • Opera Mobile browser for hot spot log-in and Web surfing
  • Email functionality - 50 emails can be stored in up to 10 accounts
  • Large color screen display with 176 by 220 pixels
  • Smart text input
  • Talk time - up to 5 hours GSM, 2 hours 802.11 wireless mode
  • Messages - up to 30 messages can be stored at 459 characters each
  • Phonebook - up to 300 contacts
  • Data storage - up to 24 megabytes for documents, images, music and video files.
  • Tasks - stores up to 100 entries
  • Calendar - up to 100 events, 160 letters per event
  • Charging - 3 hours, first time charge 8 hours
  • Compact design with internal antenna
  • Power-saving mode for maximum standby and talk time

V-CLICK phones are scheduled to ship early in 2007 at a suggested retail price of $599.99.

Does Text Speak Hinder Literacy?

cul8r.jpgIt’s a question that has been posed many times. With the prevalence of “text speak,” or the abbreviated and sometimes mashed-up language used in sending SMS messages, people–particularly parents and teachers of school-aged youth–have begun to worry about the potential of SMS in contributing to illiteracy. Imagine spelling “CUL8R” instead of the correct phrase “see you later.” What about using phonetic spellings like “dat” instead of “that.” Wht abt rmovng vowels frm msgs altgthr?

Sounds bad, doesn’t it? However, it doesn’t seem so much of an issue when it comes to literacy and learning, according to research by Coventry University in the UK, as cited by BBC. The study found that students who are fond of “textisms” are actually doing well in correct spelling and writing.

“So far, our research has suggested that there is no evidence to link text messaging among children to a poorer ability in standard English.

“Those children who were the best at using “textisms” were also found to be the better spellers and writers,” …

However, the conclusions made were more of an affirmation to the skills of students who are already good writers and spellers in the first place–and these are also the same students who are identified as strong readers. The question now is whether these textisms are negatively affecting students who are not strong at either reading, spelling or writing in the first place.

Of course, for adults, this could also be bigger issue altogether. After all, things done out of habit are quite difficult to unlearn. For instance, for people like myself in the business of writing content, slips in spelling, grammar, and usage could be quite costly (or at least embarassing). And this is why I usually type out SMS messages in full, most of the time assisted by the phone’s T9 dictionary. I only abbreviate when I edit my messages to fit within the SMS character limits–I’m a cheapo!

Do you think textspeak poses a hindrance to learning and literacy?

Nokia’s N95 Smartphone

Nokia's N95 SmartphoneNokia has released a complete specification sheet on the S60, a smartphone in the N95 family.

It includes a 5 megapixel digital camera, integrated GPS, 802.11g WiFi, HSDPA, microSD, and 150MB of internal memory. A good set of features, though the internal memory could have been a bit bigger.

The 2.6-inch QVGA screen should be just as good as the iPod with video for watching movies, and there’s a full-on 3.5mm audio jack to enjoy your multimedia.

The downside, though not as bad as some of the competition, is its 550 Euro pricetag, or approximately $700 USD, but you have until the first quarter of 2007 to save up.

Check out all of what Nokia has out at Digital Advisor.
