Sharp 904SH Includes VGA Display and Face Recognition

Sharp 904SHPeople keep asking me when they should buy a cell phone, and my response has been “wait a few months, there is this cool thing in Japan that you will want”… And so they wait, and the phone eventually comes over to North America, and they ask me if they should gety it, and I have to tell them to wait as something even better comes out. To prove the point, Vodafone K.K. and Sharp have announced the 904SH, the first mobile with a VGA resolution main display.

The incredible features do not end with the display though, as the Sharp 904SH also includes a 3.2 megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom, Bluetooth, and a miniSD expansion slot. This is all well and good, but Sharp has not stopped here - the 904SH includes two very interesting features that I hope make it out of Japan soon: Motion Control Sensor and Face Recognition.

With the Motion Control Sensor and the Vodafone NAVI GPS navigation service, the handset can sense its motion in 3D, and adjust the display of the map to reflect where the user is facing. Probably the most interesting feature though is Face Recognition - this security feature activates the internal camera whenever the handset is opened, and can identify whether the user is authorized to access the device within one second using eye and mouth facial features.

There is no word yet about bringing this phone to North America, but if Sharp can release a phone with these features, you can expect other companies are not too far behind.

Sharp’s 903SH / SX833

Mobile Burn has a great review of the Sharp 903SH. They also have some pictures of a nice red colored cell phone with some older styling.

The red SmarTone-Vodafone SX833 sold in Hong Kong is essentially the same as the Vodafone Sharp 903SH. We were able to put this phone through its paces on the local 3G network here in Hong Kong. Except where noted, everything that you read about the SX833 for the Hong Kong market should also apply to the 903SH that is available in Europe.

Physical aspects

The Sharp SX833 is an upgrade to the company’s earlier SX813 model, which was a rebranded version of the Sharp 902SH. The concept of the SX833/903SH handset is basically the same: a folder with a rotatable screen. One of the first things you notice is the lack of an external display; instead the function is partly fulfilled by 2 LEDs, one on the side and the other that also serves as the camera assist lamp. They indicate incoming calls, missed calls, and new messages.

Sharp WX-T71 and WX-T91

Phoneyworld has details on two new phones from Sharp, and they do look sharp if you’ll excuse the pun.

Sharp WX-T71 and WX-T91

The Sharp T91 has some unique differences as compared to present day cell phones. While it has a clamshell shape; unlike other clamshells it still has its camera on the back. The camera lens is capable of taking pictures of high resolution since it is of 3.2 megapixels. The upper half has the ability to swivel 180 degrees, but its not like any other clamshell. The T91 has a part of the upper half remain solid while the remaining part swivels, check out the picture to see what I am talking about. One needs to open up the clamshell and hold it horizontally to take pictures and video due to the position of the camera lens. The Sharp T91 is a huge improvement over the 903SH in terms of camera and features. The display of this beautiful clamshell is a TFT with capacity of showing 262,000 colors. The phone also has stereo speakers and in order to add to the effect, it has dual speakers (one on each side of the upper half -next to the camera and volume keys). the T91 is also known as the V903 SH in some markets. the T91 has the added benefit of having an anti glare display which unlike many screens is visible from any angle to the user.
