Sony Ericsson K800 Review

Sony Ericsson K800Pocket-lint has a first look review of the Sony Ericsson K800, the most serious camera phone option from Sony.

First impressions were very, very good, and while we initially scoffed at the idea of leaving our holiday memories in the hands of a phone rather than a camera we left thinking that we could be convinced. Or that we might not panic if we only had one of these in our pocket when we came through passport control.

The headline feature here is obviously the 3.2 megapixel resolution, which is way up there with digital cameras from a couple of years ago, and well up to printing on standard 6×4 paper. The 2-inch 262k colour LCD display also appeared to do the business, although we were indoors and would like to see how it performs in the bright sunshine.

While they don’t give the final rating, they do list some pro’s and con’s of the phone. They were happy with the resolution, BestPic mode, and the attractive styling of the phone, but they were a little disappointed with the lack of a Carl Zeiss optics system.

Sony Ericsson and Google Collaborate

Google and Sony Ericsson are going to work closely together to integrate Google’s Blogger and Web Search services into Sony Ericsson phones. I am sure many photo bloggers, or bloggers on the go will love such features. The first Sony Ericsson products to offer the new service are the recently announced K610 UMTS phone and new flagship imaging handsets, the K800 and K790, announced today and available in Q2 2006.

“We are seeing exponential growth in blogging and consumers are turning more and more often to the Internet as a means of sharing information or images in personal blogs,” said Jan Wäreby, Corporate Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing, Sony Ericsson. “By working with Google, we’re able to offer a quick and easy way for people users to blog as they discover how convenient it is as a way to share words and pictures with friends, family and beyond. We are also delighted to collaborate with Google, the undisputed leader in Web Search, to provide our end users with relevant Internet information directly to their Sony Ericsson handsets.”

“By providing users with direct access to features like mobile search and blogging, we’re able to create a more personalized, user-friendly experience,” said Nikesh Arora, vice president, European Operations, Google Inc. “Today’s tech-savvy consumers are becoming increasingly more mobile and demand access to information on-the-go, whether it’s the latest news headlines or directions to a favourite restaurant.”

Additionally, commencing today Google will become the standard search engine for all new Sony Ericsson Internet-capable phones. It has been tightly integrated into the phone’s web experience with multiple intuitive access points. For instance, users can directly activate a Google Web Search option from whichever page they are viewing without the need to launch a new web page to complete a search. With one click, users will be able to quickly and easily access the information they need.

Sony Cyber-shot K800 and K790 Camera Phones

Sony Cyber-shot K800 Looking more camera than phone in the pictures I have seen, Sony Ericsson, have introduced two new phones with the Cyber-shot name. The K800 and K790 camera phones deliver new level of imaging quality with 3.2 megapixel digital camera systems built in. And unlike most other phones, it also has an autofocus, flash and what Sony calls BestPic, an imaging technology to help you capture the images you want. These are the first handsets to carry the Cyber-shot brand.

K800 is a dual-mode UMTS/GPRS phone and the K790 is a Tri Band EDGE phone. Both are available from Q2 2006.

“With the Cyber-shot™ phone we aim to create a new lifestyle of ‘imaging communication’ by combining Sony Ericsson’s unique mobile applications and Sony digital imaging technologies,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President, Product and Application Planning, Sony Ericsson. “Our aim has always been to innovate and create new values for the mobile life, and with the Cyber-shot™ phone we will enable anyone to enjoy an entirely new level of communication –taking quality pictures of anything, anytime and anywhere, and sharing their precious moments with others.”

The handsets have a classic Sony Ericsson design, with a large screen and responsive, tactile keypad with a sleek and stylish dual front phone design. Turn the phones horizontally and there you have a digital still camera. Simply slide the active lens cover downwards and a user interface similar to that of a Cyber-shot™ camera automatically appears.

A completely new feature developed by Sony Ericsson is BestPic™, which ensures that you never ‘miss’ an important picture. Press the shutter button once and get 9 full quality 3.2 megapixel pictures to choose from in a time sequence – 4 pictures before and 4 pictures after the actual image you captured. All 9 pictures are displayed as icons on the display. Simply scroll backwards and forwards through the 9 images and save the ones you like best.

The Sony Ericsson K800 is a dual-mode UMTS handset while K790 is a Tri Band EDGE handset. Both products will be commercially available in Velvet Black and start shipping globally during Q2 2006.

Top rated 3G phones

Sony Ericsson W900iInfoSync World shows off their top rated 3G cell phones in a recent article. They give the Sony Ericsson W900i top honors, with others falling in line behind it.

Sony Ericsson W900i (Score: 87%, Very good)

Sony Ericsson W900i
Making its way to the number one spot on our list ist Sony Ericsson’s all-singing, all-dancing W900i, complete with speedy 3G; a superb high-resolution display; and a snap-happy 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus. Its browser is unfortunately rather average and battery life is naturally modest for such a fully featured handset - but for €650 EUR, one does get an outstanding music player and Bluetooth connectivity for either streaming audio in stereo or providing high-speed Internet access for a laptop.

The other phones mentioned are the Nokia N70, Nokia 6680, LG U880 and the Sony Ericsson K608i.

Hands-On With Sony Ericsson’s M600

Sony Ericsson M600Mobile Burn has been able to take a look at the M600 from Sony Ericsson.

The inaugural M series handset, the UMTS/GSM M600, shares a large percentage of its components with the W950 Walkman phone that was announced later that night.

The keyboard has an unusual layout that is not altogether dissimilar to that of the RIM BlackBerry 7100 series. A somewhat normal numeric keypad is found in the middle of the device, and an extra column of keys are found on either side of it.

Each key represents two letters of the alphabet, just as is the case in the RIM handsets.

The M600 comes with about 80MB of internal storage built-in. In order to augment that further, a Memory Stick Micro slot was installed on the right side of the device.

The M600’s nice 2.6″ QVGA display is only slightly smaller than the display found in the P990 (2.8″).

It is very bright, and has touch-screen functionality that enables the user to use a stylus with the UIQ v3 user interface that the M600 runs on top of Symbian OS v9.1.

In the end they let us know that Europe and North Americal can expect to see the M600 around the second quarter of this year.

Some really cool details on the P990 from Sony Ericsson coming in from Pocket-Lint. It looks like the phone will have a few tricks up its sleeve that were not announced in the original announcement months ago.

Sony Ericsson has turned the 2 megapixel camera into a business card scanner as well as a camera and also added support for email clients including Blackberry Connect and Seven.

Finally, the company has added Microsoft ActiveSync support to the device for windows users.

The new model will be 3G and Wi-Fi enabled, have a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and feature a new hardware keyboard beneath the flip-down keypad.

Sony Ericsson W800i Review

Sony Ericsson W800i TechTree.com has a review up of the Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman phone.

The Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman phone is a tri-band GSM/GPRS handset. It’s a non-Smartphone just like W550i, which doesn’t run on Symbian or Windows or any other “OS”. However, it’s got almost everything that you can possibly imagine in a snazzy-looking phone. It carries the footprints of the K750i, but with a Walkman-ised look and feel. It’s got a powerful set of audio playback applications, a full fledged 2 megapixel digital camera, an FM radio tuner and a 512MB Memory Stick Duo bundled with it.

It has a vivid orange colored body with an ivory front panel. The keypad is well spaced out and the buttons are equally distant, deeply sunk into the body. The keys are of excellent quality and provide smooth and soft tactile feedback - comfortable especially while texting. And the joystick is made in the style of the “soft touch” technology, where the slightest deviation allows controlling movement along the screen - very handy while accessing music playback functions. The backlighting is also orange and well seen in various lighting conditions. The menu system is quite appealing as well. It uses the Walkman theme with groovy, high quality animations and yet fast and efficient in response.

In the end they give it a four and a half out of five on their rating scale with the only downside to the phone being that there is no standard USB connector, and that drivers required for USB detection in windows.

Sony Ericsson Launches Stylish W810 Walkman(R) Phone

New Quad-Band EDGE Walkman Phone Delivers High-Quality Music Experience With Two Megapixel AutoFocus Camera and Removable Memory

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ — CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW — Sony Ericsson today announced the latest addition to its line-up of Walkman(R)- branded mobile music phones to further enhance the consumer’s mobile music experience, the sophisticated, Satin Black W810. The Sony Ericsson W810 is a Quad-band EDGE phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), enabling people to easily transfer their CD collection while staying connected to friends, family and business colleagues anywhere in the world.

The Sony Ericsson W810 offers the latest in mobile multi-media functionality. The W810 lets you listen to hours of music, capture and send high-resolution images, access the Internet, as well as take advantage of fast data download speeds for games and streaming video and stay connected through instant messaging or email. The latest Walkman phone comes with a 512MB removable Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM), which can be upgraded to a 2GB Memory Stick already available in retail stores, allowing consumers to store a wealth of music tracks, photos, video and other multimedia files on the phone.

Extending the highly acclaimed Sony Ericsson Walkman phone line-up, the stylish black with orange trim W810 advances the mobile music experience by seamlessly blending together entertainment and advanced mobile phone technology to offer a truly credible digital music experience supporting industry standard MP3 and AAC music file formats. The phone comes complete with quality HPM-70 stereo headphones which feature a standard 3.5mm headphone jack for personal customization.

Consumers can easily and quickly load music to the phone by uploading their CD collection on to the W810 from a PC via Memory Stick PRO Duo or USB 2.0 using the provided Disc2Phone music management software. This enclosed PC software makes it easy to sort, browse and transfer files on the 512 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo, which provides capacity for approximately 150 music tracks — the equivalent of around 15 full length CDs.

Enjoying music on the Sony Ericsson W810 Walkman phone is extremely simple because a dedicated Walkman button quickly pulls up the music menu regardless of other applications in use. The most common music controls needed (Play/Pause/Stop/Skip Track/Volume) are positioned just below the phone’s screen which allows people to move easily between tracks or adjust the volume on the speaker or headphones. Engaging Mega Bass(TM) improves the sound experience when listening to music through the external speaker or the high quality headphones provided.

“Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones are redefining how consumers listen and enjoy music. Since the launch of the W800 flagship Walkman (R) phone in August 2005, consumers across the world have been embracing the concept of the mobile phone as a credible digital music player. It is very exciting to see how Walkman phones are allowing people around the world to enjoy high quality music anywhere, anytime,” said Miles Flint, president for Sony Ericsson.

“Like the popular song ‘Born in the USA’, the W810 Walkman phone was specifically designed with the needs of North American operators and consumers in mind, and it is the most advanced Walkman phone to date created for this region,” said Najmi Jarwala, president and head of North American operations, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (USA), Inc. “If the sales of the current Walkman phones are any indication, we are expecting big things for the W810. It is an exciting time to be at Sony Ericsson in North America as we are starting to rapidly roll out innovative designs and feature-rich devices at all price segments for North American consumers.”

The Sony Ericsson W810 features an integrated high-quality 2 megapixel auto-focus camera with photo light. It also features an easily recognizable digital camera-like interface enabling you to capture quality pictures and video.

As with all Walkman phones, your music automatically pauses when an incoming call is received and begins playing again when the call ends. The phone also offers a music-only mode for those occasions when the phone function must be disengaged, such as during air travel.

The W810 is equipped with EDGE technology, to allow quick and easy data transfers and Internet access, and Bluetooth(TM) Wireless technology for connectivity with Bluetooth handsfree headsets and sharing data with other Bluetooth-enabled devices. A range of Walkman phone accessories including speakers and desk stands will also be available.
